I took so many pictures while on vacation in Sunriver. I tried to strike a balance between my desire to draw everything and spend quality time with my family on vacation. Even though artists seem to disdain drawing from photos, for me it was a compromise. I see now that my photographs do not come close to the memory of the colors I experienced. The colors in the shadows were all reduced to near black, the lights were completely washed out. Still, I chose to make some sketches from snapshots of the bike paths. When I took these photos, the kids eventually left me behind. They would rather go as fast as possible than to savor the sites, or wait for their mom. I can’t blame them. One day I hope to spend an entire week painting in Sunriver. I know my days with the kids at home are numbered, so for now, I will be satisfied with photos.
